Sixteen ladies from West Acres FCE (Family and Community Education) in Wichita spent the day in Anthony on Tuesday, November 7. After enjoying a delightful lunch at the Diva House, they visited the 9-11 Memorial in Memorial Park.
Debbie Mangen, from the Memorial Committee, met the ladies at the park and related how Anthony became involved with the 9-11 disaster by adopting the family of fallen firefighter, Joseph P. Spor, Jr. She told how the relationship evolved with the surviving members of Spor’s firehouse and how the Anthony community rallied to the cause. Because of this personal interaction, Anthony chose to erect a permanent memorial in remembrance of this disaster and the heroic efforts of firefighters.
Beams from the World Trade Center, a stone from the Pentagon and soil from the Pennsylvania field, representing each of the crash sites, have been included in this monument. This memorial has been designated as the official Kansas 9-11 Memorial.
The Wichita ladies were impressed by the involvement and commitment of the Anthony community in response to the 9-11 disaster. They plan to follow up with this in one of their programs next year.
Following the visit to the Memorial, the ladies enjoyed shopping on Main Street-Anthony and were impressed with how active this little town is.
Jeanie Tade, a member of West Acres FCE and an AHS alumnus, coordinated the plans for the day. Other visitors were: Sharon Williams, Connie Huslig, Joan Kotrba, Janice McClernon, Rose Mary Hirschler, Bernice Pearson, June Koerper, Rose Wasinger, Sandy Schermuly, Pat Beyer, Phyllis Horine, Shirley Zandler, Shirley Thompson, Mary Wright and Jacky Hazelwood.
Thank you all for keeping us in your prayers and thoughts. It's been an emotional day and last few weeks. Can't lose the thought of all those poor innocent souls that began what started as a beautiful autumn day 5 years ago and ended up in horror. Still feeling the pain of recent loss of 2 Bronx firefighters that were buried only a week and a half ago. Lt. Howie Carpluk was a friend of mine. The cause of the collapse in that fire seems to be shoddy workmanship in floor beams and lack of building deptartment follow-up after a fire burned out the same store six years ago. As far as all the 9-11 related news, activities etc. I haven't and don't want to watch any of it. But it is very comforting to me that folks like yourselves from all the way across the country have made sure people remember what happened to our fellow Americans. I really do appreciate the way you continue to care about us here.
Your friend,
Richard Kirschner

Dear Debbie and the Anthony 9-11 Committee,
On this day I think about my son Gerard who was assigned to Rescue 3
FDNY. He gave up his life for all of us. I also think of you, my family in
Anthony KS. You people should be proud of what you have accomplished.
God Bless All of You.
Gerry Schrang Sr.
Dear Debbie -Thank you for sending us the interview & story about 9/11 and especially for the wonderful memorial that you and your fellow townspeople constructed in memory of all those lost on that fateful day. My husband is a retired FDNY firefighter and lost many many friends on 9/11 and we can't tell you enough how much we appreciate all of you for remembering us. You have renewed our faith in mankind just knowing that there are people like you out there. During that time we attended so many memorial services and funerals that I couldn't even tell you how many but we were at Joe Spor's funeral. Each and every one of these services were so very sad but you probably would like to know were attended by thousands of FDNY members as well as hundreds of firefighters from out of town who usually travelled long distances to pay their respects. That was sometimes difficult because some days there were as many as five services or more on the same day.Our Emerald Society Pipe Band sometimes would have to spread out over the number of funerals on a specific day and if the whole band couldn't be at one funeral, there would be, at least, several guys to play but someone would always be there. Retired band members also came out and put on their kilts and played. That was a time in our lives that we will never forget. Nor should we. I only wish that there was more going on at the WTC and stop the stalling and rebuild. After five years, enough is enough. I don't know if you know this but just opposite the place there the buildings were is a firehouse - Eng.10/Ladder 10. Well, on the side of that firehouse there is a bronze plaque measuring 60' x 6' which depicts the scene that day and underneath all the names of the 343 firefighters that we lost. This plaque was not done by the City of New York but by the FDNY and also a law firm who lost a partner of the firm who was a volunteer firefighter in his town and who ran down to the scene, borrowed gear from that firehouse and went into the buildings. He died there. So it was a joint effort to put together this plan and it was done - thank God! If any of you ever visit N.Y.C. make sure to see it.
Again thank you for showing us the true spirit of America!!Carol & Jack Culkin

Debbie,
I was very impressed by the memorial that you and all of those that worked on
the project have put together to honor those that perished that day.
But more than that, it serves as a constant reminder to all of us that survived here at the Pentagon, in New York, and across the country, that we can never give up our fight against those that are intent on doing grave harm to the United States, our people, and our way of life.
I remember the day that Mike Furgason came to pick up the limestone, he was so
excited about what you were doing out there, that he was ready to explode, and I
knew that anybody that would haul 300lbs of limestone half way across the
country (on vacation) had to be dedicated and believe very deeply in what he was
doing.
Again, congratulations on a very impressive finished product and
thank you from all of us here for doing what you're doing.

Wow! I see the 9-11 Memorial every time I come home to the town of Anthony Kansas, that I miss so much, to see my family. I never really knew the whole story behind the preparation in getting the artifacts together. Thanks Boloney for sending me the website.
What an awe-inspiring mark of reverence for our Hero’s of 9-11 that you… the 9-11 Memorial Committee designed… great job, it’s beautiful! And you are so right, "We have not forgotten; We will never forget; We will always care”.

Congratulations!!!! I read all of the stories, and they are really great, You guy's should be very proud!! The example your town, and everyone associated is the most positive and sincere message I have seen since 9-11. I think your Memorial, and all that it took to accomplish it, should be displayed for everyone in the world to see and understand,

It is really impressive that a small community like Anthony has
created and hosts the state's official memorial.
The memorial is striking. The circular shape speaks of community, the limestone
base evokes Liberty, the steel sculpture will not allow anybody to forget what
it is and why it's there. It's scale is human and height meets the viewer
eye-to-eye. It is classy and beautiful.
It is a credit to those it honors. and it conveys the pure thoughtfulness of the
people of Anthony.

Thanks so much to you and Anthony Kansas . Your town is the BIG STAR in the middle of this great nation . You'll never know how much honor and healing you have given to so many people involved in the events of 9-11-01 . Look on Mapquest, you really are the star in the middle of the country !( No accident )
I guess what I mean to say is that somehow your town heard the cry Anthony ! And somehow you knew you were being called.
Excerpts from a letter by Barbara Spor O’Rourke
As the sister of fallen Firefighter Joseph P. Spor Jr., I am grateful for this opportunity to tell you what the Anthony Kansas Memorial means to our family. It’s the stuff stories are made of. Your great mayor, John Schott, and his family and his constituency reached out to us in our darkest hour and reassured our family and all of those affected, that the United States was ONE in this attack and that we stood together as a nation. Although we are separated by 1300 miles, our hearts and spirits were joined as one.
Now, almost four years later, when we speak of the horrors and tragedy of 9/11, we always can finish our story about the good people of Kansas who cared and gave as patriotic Americans, a place whose people want to always remember the innocent victims and great heroes of September 11th. Living in the New York City metropolitan area, I personally have not seen a 9/11 memorial that is of the magnitude of the Anthony Memorial. We wholeheartedly support the effort to designate the Anthony Memorial as the official Kansas Memorial. We know you are proud of your fellow citizens of Kansas for this tremendous feat. We are truly honored by this memorial and are forever grateful for your efforts.

To the folks of Anthony,
As the fourth anniversary of 9/11 is rapidly approaching, I find that so many people have forgotten what happened on that beautiful, horrible day.
As one of the thousands who lost a family member that day, it makes me feel good knowing that a small town like yours stands with us to honor those who were murdered that day.
My husband lost his oldest brother and many friends at the WTC that day. They were all firefighters, doing what they loved.
My husband is retired FDNY and made it to NYC on 9/15/01. He worked on the rescue and recovery for 8 months, with a 2 week break to come home for Christmas 2001. He and his father and younger brother (dad is retired FDNY and brother is still on the job) spent countless hours working at the site. They never did find my brother in law, FF Gary P. Geidel, Rescue Co. 1.
Thank you for all of your hard work and inspiration. You truly do live in the HEART-land of America and your memorial proudly shows it.
Warmest regards,

I doubt that the 'reinventors of history' in this rotten state will
give a rip what the entire state of Kansas or anyone else thinks for that
matter.
They will continue to shove this 'modern art masterpiece' down the our
throats. I will now need to feel guilty that I am an American, a New
Yorker an almost victim of 9/11, and a potential victim of the next attack
every time I see this piece of trash.
You have no idea now comforting it is that there are others out there, I
cannot escape the irony that your entire town population +/-3000 is less
that the total # of the victims here that day. Thank You again.
Sincerely,
Frank Finamore
I just now was able to see the website on Anthony's 9-11 memorial. I was very touched by the page. It makes me very proud to have served in the USN knowing all the support we have gotten. Yes I was off the coast of New York when the accident happened, it is definitely a day to never be forgotten. I just want to say thanks for everything.

unfortunately, I was unable to make it as I had to go out of town to Texas on business. I did review the pictures that you uploaded to the site. Looks like you had a wonderful turn out. We are hoping that we can get down there within the next 20-30 days and see the great job that was done. If I can ask a favor, and it is okay if you are unable, but can you take a picture of the brick that was laid for us?? That would be wonderful. I can pass that around to the family and pass on the last email that you sent out on your broadcast for all the rest to see the great work that was done. Again, and as always through the past months, THANKS FOR THE GREAT DEDICATION AND WORK THAT YOU AND ALL HAVE DONE FROM ANTHONY, KANSAS, AND ALL THE SURROUNDING FROM CITY TO CITY AND STATE TO STATE. BLESS THOSE WE HAVE LOST, AND BLESS THAT THOSE SERVE IN OUR SPECIAL SERVICES, ASSOCIATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS.

To all in Anthony,
What I am saying is through all of this I have made some very close and strong relationships. From the brothers there in the Anthony Fire Dept., to the Honorable Mayor John Schott and his family, all the way to The Bronx, Joe Huber, and Kevin Maher.
I want to say thank you, along with my wife we have never experienced such hospitality. The example your town puts forth is second to none. I would like to close by saying, in my book, YOU ARE THE REAL HERO'S!!!!

Hi. My name is Michael Kotula and I am a NYC Fireman at Engine 40 and
Ladder 35. I'm writing to thank you for including the men we lost in
your memorial to 9/11.
I spoke to all the families and they are delighted to have their men
honored. I am mailing back the forms today. The form does say that if
we wished to have them grouped together to let you know. Well we do!
They were together till the end and will always remain together.
I have been here at 40&35 for 22 years now and I worked with all of
the men. Several of them where also my very good friends and
considered brothers by me. So I would personally like to thank you.
We have a new
firefighter here who is from Kansas City Kansas and still has all his
family there. So maybe with his help we can get up a trip out there in
the near future to visit the memorial.
Once again thank you
for considering our families and if there is any way I can help, feel
free to email me.
Gratefully yours, FF Michael Kotula L-35
P.S. What is the estimated date of completion?

The world would be a better place if everyone showed the love & devotion that was displayed by you all.
Donna,
Thank you for all your love, care and support for the families and the people of New York. What a wonderful and beautiful expression by the wonderful people of Anthony. God Bless America God Bless Anthony, Kansas. We know people such as Maggie Grimes have given so much time, effort and dedication to never let the people of the United States forget Sept 11,2001. Maggie has continued her love of country by her untiring support of our soldiers as they defend our great country.
God Bless you and the people of Anthony.

We want to thank you and the Anthony 9-11 committee, the town
of Anthony and everyone involved for sharing your memorial. It was so good
to commemorate 9-11 with so many people who really get it. There seem to
be fewer every year. I'll get pictures and video to you ASAP - but I'm
sure many others will have better.
Thanks again.

Debbie, thank you for sending me the 9-11 Memorial Update. I commend you and the people of Anthony for your hard work building the memorial. HELLO FRIENDS!
Our beautiful memorial has been dedicated and is just gorgeous! We
had a beautiful, warm evening. Our town showed up in force and filled
the park. And lots of travelers from all over the nation were there to
help us celebrate the lives of your heroes.
And Mr. Boyle, I want you to know that throughout the
entire evening, I had Michael's heart that you sent to
me in the palm of my hand. And Marge and Maggie, you were in all of our
thoughts and we know that Maggie's boys, (which is what we call those
fortunate enough to have you as their angel) were up there watching us
all
evening.
I promise to get the photos of the evening on line ASAP. Tonight, we
are having a little get together with the firefighters and EMT's at Howard's.
I just wanted to let you know that the dedication
is over and it was a wonderful evening.

To the wonderful people of Anthony:
On this 3rd anniversary of my Joe's tragic death, it is hard to believe how
much time has passed without having him in our daily lives.
Joe was an exemplary member of the FDNY and he
was everything to me and my four children. Not many families shared the bond
that we shared. Not many
families had what we had.
Joe had gone in to work for his evening tour on the 10th and was to return
home a little after six in the evening on the 11th. 9/11/01 started out as
just another normal, carefree, happy day. I spoke to Joe, at 8:30 AM, on the
phone, while he was at the quarters of Rescue 3 before he, and the seven other
members, got the call. Joe was looking forward to putting in
the day tour and then return home to his family. Joe's firehouse got the call
around 8:47 AM. I heard the alarm in the background.
As the events unfolded the morning of 9/11, my initial thought was that Joe
would not be home until midnight. It was a war zone down in Manhattan. We were
attacked by terrorists and Joe was going to do everything in his
power to help those in need. That was what he did. That was what he was
trained to do. That was his calling. Little did I know that our life, my
world, would crash, tumble down, as fast as the South Tower did.
The days and many long months that followed after that tragic day is one BIG
blur. I still can not believe it happened....to him...to me...to my
children...to our family...to our friends...to our City that we grew
up in and loved...and to our Nation.
Then there were people in and out of my life offering hope and help. Some were
best friends, some were friends from long ago, some were acquaintances.
And then there were the people of Anthony. How could it be that a small town
so far away could find its way to me and my children? Who would have thought
that the people of Anthony,KS would care so much about us? This
"connection" would not have been made possible without the involvement
of Lt. Joe Huber ( a man that Joe worked with at Engine 88/Ladder38, whom he
looked up to and admired), and complete and absolute strangers from
halfway across the country.. Mayor John Schott and the people of Anthony.
It has truly been comforting for my children to NOW that people of Anthony
think of them often. That my children know the people of Anthony think of
their daddy as a hero, just as they do. That my children know that the people
of Anthony are so proud of their daddy, just as they are. That the people of
Anthony have built such a beautiful memorial in their daddy's honor as well as
the other heroes of 9/11. My children now know
what real wheat looks like before it is processed in to bread. They now know
what a combine looks like and they "can't wait" to get their first ride on one
when we come out for our visit. I am sure that they will feel at home in
Anthony.
To all of you who stand here today to honor my husband, Joe, my children's
father, as well as the other heroes from 9/11....not a second goes by that I
don't think of my Joe, and not a day goes by that I do not think
of them...or of you.
Once again, thank you for your love and support.
"WE WILL NEVER FORGET"
With deepest gratitude,

9/11 Memorial
It doesn't matter where I was on September 11th, 2001 and it doesn't
matter if I had any personal friends or family in New York that sad sad
day; I have never had any one single tragedy touch my heart like that
day. They all became my friends & family that day. As I watched those
men & women run into the towers I remember thinking how selfless their
acts of rescue truly were. I'll never forget the helplessness that
overcame me as I sat watching the World Trade Towers collapse, fearing
that the chances of escape and futile. Yet, amazingly, stories of great
courage and miracles surfaced. I love the fact that this memorial gives
me the ability to show my appreciation and gratitude for all those
that sacrifice their lives everyday. Life is too precious to waste on
trivial matters, and the fallout of 9/11 has continued to shape how I
think, how I treat others, and most of all, it completely re-ignited my
patriotism. 'Never Forget' is a message that Americans need to keep
close to their hearts!

My dear friend, Jimmy Boyle, asked if I would place the Anthony Kansas Memorial on my web site - Keystone-FDNY-Retirees . I'm sure our "Thousand Points of Right" will respond and help you in accomplishing this wonderful tribute!
I
just wanted to say thank you. I
do not need this posted on the website.
As
I said in the meeting that I attended for the memorial, I think that this is
great for Anthony. I do not get
home as much as I would like, but I still consider Anthony as my home.
The great thing about Anthony is that there are always people thinking
about others and they are always concerned about what is going on with you
(whether you want them to or not). J
This memorial will give those of us that are not at home and have not
gone through this process with you an opportunity to remember a major event in
our lives (together). As one of
my college professors said, this is the first (and hopefully the last) major
traumatic event that our generation has had to face.
It brought us closer to the generations before us.
It reminded older generations of events that happened in their lifetime
and made my generation more aware of those events.
I believe that this horrible tragedy somehow brought the generations
closer together and gave each of us a respect for each other.
I know that this is something that I will always think of when I see
the memorial. Thank you for a
place that I can go and remember.
Some
of my friends from Olathe and I are coming down for the dedication of the
memorial. Again, thanks for all
of your hard work and I wish I could help.

Thanks
for your quick response. I've talked to some friends and we've decided
we want to purchase twenty-three bricks in memory of the NYPD members
who were taken on 9-11. Please give me a week or so to round up
the checks. In the meantime.....
Would
you mind e-mailing them again and let them know the gesture has been made
in memory of the Vigiano Brothers. I'm also hoping you won't
mind asking them to provide you with a list so we're sure to get their ranks
and unit numbers right.
If
you don't hear from them within a week or so, I'll send it directly to Mr.
Vigiano. Ditto if it's something you're not comfortable with doing.
Thanks
again for everything. I'll talk to you soon.

To whom it may concern:
After reading the article this A.M. in the Kansas City Star about the 9-11 Memorial the town of Anthony is trying to fund. We felt moved to send this check to help with the cost. As a Firefighter-EMT (Bob) for the past 25 years for the City of Lenexa, and having an identical twin brother as an EMT (Bill) for the past 27 years for Johnson County Medical Action. We can relate to all the EMS Men and Women of 9-11.
We would be honored to have our names placed together on a brick for the walkway. Please engrave Bob and Bill Burnett.
Thank you to all who are involved in this project. As fellow Kansas folk we are proud of you and our state.

You should be congratulated for the wonderful web site you all put together.
I never get tired of hearing stories like Anthony's relationship with the
Rescue-3 firehouse. I've read recently that when horror or
atrocities occur that it cracks open the human heart and allows the true
goodness to come out for all to see. Anthony's relationship with the Bronx
is such an example!
I'm not surprised to hear of your experience with [my friend]. She has
been nothing short of an angel on my shoulder for the past year and a half, in
getting my film out there for all to see. She's also--from behind the
scenes--performed countless random acts of kindness to many family members of
the firemen that perished on Sept 11th. She's truly, one of the good guys.
I'm very happy to hear that Anthony was the recipient of a piece of World Trade
Center steel. I feel however, that it's a travesty that more towns like
Anthony, who were there for us when it counted, weren't more fortunate...as the
bulk of the salvaged steel wound up (as I understand it) in Japan...sold as
scrap.
I wish you all the luck in the world this coming September 11th when your rescue
truck will rides into town featuring your well earned steel memorial for all to
see. It should truly be a moment to remember. I'm certain you will
make NYC proud.
I wish you a very Happy Easter and once again, thank you for writing me.

Hi Debbie,
Well back to the answering to your question of Cole, his last name is O’Leary. Hi Dad, Uncle, Great Uncle (my husband) and Grandfather (retired) are all Policemen. Cole has had a lot of exposure to both fire and police. My husband was a volunteer fireman since he was fourteen. Then when he took the position of Police Chief in’85 he had less and less time to give. He and Cole go to the station frequently. Cole also likes to ride with Tom in his new Ford 150,4x4 police truck. We’re in a small town also.
Thanks for remembering us. We wish you all the luck in getting the memorial built. We intend to buy a couple of bricks and to attend the dedication in September.
Bye for now,
Sharon Carey
Thanks so much for including the pictures of Cole and Joe on your website ... I have an article that was in our local paper, too, that I put in .pdf form which will hopefully raise some awareness for the Memorial. We are planning on coming to Anthony the w/end of 9/11 and hopefully bringing some of our local firemen.
Thanks, again!!!!
Keep in touch!

Ladies/Gentlemen,
My father, Elmer W. "Pete" Mills was a member of Engine Company 88 for nearly thirty years until he retired. He passed away in 1987, and spoke constantly about how much he missed "the job" and his "brothers". I have no doubt that if he had been alive on September 11th, he would have grabbed his helmet and gear and reported for duty. On the other hand, I'm grateful that he wasn't around to see it, because it would have broken his heart.
Therefore, I would like to purchase a brick for the Anthony, Kansas 9-11 Memorial in his name.
Thank you.
Sincerely Yours,
Mary A. Mills
Dear Committee,
Three hundred forty three of my brothers died on September 11th. Please accept my donation for three memorial bricks in honor of them and my good friend and brother, Joe Huber. I thank you for honoring all the 9-11 heroes and your support for Joe Spor's family. We will "NEVER FORGET".
Thanks again,

Please send me updates on the memorial. I used to work with Joe
Spor and
sent out my donation for a brick in his memory.

FDNY AGAIN !
JUST SO TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT THE FDNY HEROES, YEAH THEY WERE THERE SO WERE THOUSANDS OF OTHER PEOPLE, INNOCENT PEOPLE. PEOPLE THAT WENT TO WORK EVERY DAY, MAYBE BEHIND A COMPUTER, BEHIND A MOP, JUST ORDINARY PEOPLE. WE WENT IN THAT BUILDING BECAUSE IT WAS OUR JOB, WE KNEW WHAT WE SIGNED UP FOR, THE INNOCENT PEOPLE IN THE BUILDING DIDN'T. THEY SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED, BUT NO WE DO NOT RECOGNIZE THEM.

Although I no longer live in Anthony it
was where I was born and raised. I've always been proud of being from
there but now more than ever. Anthonians you have done yourself proud.
The support you gave to the 9-11 situation and the memorial pretty much says it
all. Proud to be an American and proud to be from Anthony, KS! Thank
