Dear Debbie:

Thank you so much for meeting with our West Acres FCE ladies yesterday to tell us about the Anthony 9-11 Memorial.  It was so interesting to all of us.

I want to submit the following article to the Anthony Republican for publication but wanted you to check it for accuracy first.

Thanks again for your time.

Jeanie Tade

Sixteen ladies from West Acres FCE (Family and Community Education) in Wichita spent the day in Anthony on Tuesday, November 7.  After enjoying a delightful lunch at the Diva House, they visited the 9-11 Memorial in Memorial Park.

Debbie Mangen, from the Memorial Committee, met the ladies at the park and related how Anthony became involved with the 9-11 disaster by adopting the family of fallen firefighter, Joseph P. Spor, Jr.  She told how the relationship evolved with the surviving members of Spor’s firehouse and how the Anthony community rallied to the cause.  Because of this personal interaction, Anthony chose to erect a permanent memorial in remembrance of this disaster and the heroic efforts of firefighters.

Beams from the World Trade Center, a stone from the Pentagon and soil from the Pennsylvania field, representing each of the crash sites, have been included in this monument.  This memorial has been designated as the official Kansas 9-11 Memorial.

The Wichita ladies were impressed by the involvement and commitment of the Anthony community in response to the 9-11 disaster.  They plan to follow up with this in one of their programs next year.

Following the visit to the Memorial, the ladies enjoyed shopping on Main Street-Anthony and were impressed with how active this little town is.

Jeanie Tade, a member of West Acres FCE and an AHS alumnus, coordinated the plans for the day.  Other visitors were: Sharon Williams, Connie Huslig, Joan Kotrba, Janice McClernon, Rose Mary Hirschler, Bernice Pearson, June Koerper, Rose Wasinger, Sandy Schermuly, Pat Beyer, Phyllis Horine, Shirley Zandler, Shirley Thompson, Mary Wright and Jacky Hazelwood.

Thank you for sending the TV reports about the 9-11 memorial in Anthony to me.  I enjoyed the stories so much I forwarded them on to several people around the country.

Thanks again.

Thank you all for keeping us in your prayers and thoughts. It's been an emotional day and last few weeks. Can't lose the thought of all those poor innocent souls that began what started as a beautiful autumn day 5 years ago and ended up in horror. Still feeling the pain of recent loss of 2 Bronx firefighters that were buried only a week and a half ago. Lt. Howie Carpluk was a friend of mine. The cause of the collapse in that fire seems to be shoddy workmanship in floor beams and lack of building deptartment follow-up after a fire burned out the same store six years ago. As far as all the 9-11 related news, activities etc. I haven't and don't want to watch any of it. But it is very comforting to me that folks like yourselves  from all the way across the country have made sure people remember what happened to our fellow Americans. I really do appreciate the way you continue to care about us here.

I so look forward to each fall as I take to the woods with bow & arrow. I am especially looking forward to this year as we will be entertaining Myron & Jerri our new "Okie" friends here in NY as they get a small taste of NYC and then head up to the beautiful mountains of upstate NY to do some hunting with us. And then in November we get to see all the friends we made in Anthony etc. as we return for "FDNY meets the West" Part 2. I've looked forward to this trip since last year's trip ended.
Once again, I thank you all for the kind thoughts you've expressed to me not only this past week but whenever the FDNY has a tragedy.

Your friend,

Richard Kirschner

Dear Debbie and the Anthony 9-11 Committee,

On this day I think about my son Gerard who was assigned to Rescue 3
FDNY. He gave up his life for all of us. I also think of you, my family in
Anthony KS. You people should be proud of what you have accomplished.

God Bless All of You.

Dear Debbie -

Thank you for sending us the interview & story about 9/11 and especially for the wonderful memorial that you and your fellow townspeople constructed in memory of all those lost on that fateful day.  My husband is a retired FDNY firefighter and lost many many friends on 9/11 and we can't tell you enough how much we appreciate all of you for remembering us.  You have renewed our faith in mankind just knowing that there are people like you out there.  During that time we attended so many memorial services and funerals that I couldn't even tell you how many but we were at Joe Spor's funeral.  Each and every one of these services were so very sad but you probably would like to know were attended by thousands of FDNY members as well as hundreds of firefighters from out of town who usually travelled long distances to pay their respects.  That was sometimes difficult because some days there were as many as five services or more on the same day.Our Emerald Society Pipe Band sometimes would have to spread out over the number of funerals on a specific day and if the whole band couldn't be at one funeral, there would be, at least, several guys to play  but someone would always be there.  Retired band members also came out and put on their kilts and played.  That was a time in our lives that we will never forget.  Nor should we.  I only wish that there was more going on at the WTC and stop the stalling and rebuild.  After five years, enough is enough.  I don't know if you know this but just opposite the place there the buildings were is a firehouse - Eng.10/Ladder 10.  Well, on the side of that firehouse there is a bronze plaque measuring 60' x 6' which depicts the scene that day and underneath all the names of the 343 firefighters that we lost.  This plaque was not done by the City of New York but by the FDNY and also a law firm who lost a partner of the firm who was a volunteer firefighter in his town and who ran down to the scene, borrowed gear from that firehouse and went into the buildings. He died there.  So it was a joint effort to put together this plan and it was done - thank God!  If any of you ever visit N.Y.C. make sure to see it.

Again thank you for showing us the true spirit of America!!

Debbie,
I was very impressed by the memorial that you and all of those that worked on the project have put together to honor those that perished that day.

But more than that, it serves as a constant reminder to all of us that survived here at the Pentagon, in New York, and across the country, that we can never give up our fight against those that are intent on doing grave harm to the United States, our people, and our way of life.

I remember the day that Mike Furgason came to pick up the limestone, he was so excited about what you were doing out there, that he was ready to explode, and I knew that anybody that would haul 300lbs of limestone half way across the country (on vacation) had to be dedicated and believe very deeply in what he was doing.

Again, congratulations on a very impressive finished product and thank you from all of us here for doing what you're doing.

Wow!  I see the 9-11 Memorial every time I come home to the town of Anthony Kansas, that I miss so much, to see my family.  I never really knew the whole story behind the preparation in getting the artifacts together.  Thanks Boloney for sending me the website.

What an awe-inspiring mark of reverence for our Hero’s of 9-11 that you… the 9-11 Memorial Committee designed… great job, it’s beautiful!  And you are so right, "We have not forgotten; We will never forget; We will always care”.

Congratulations!!!! I read all of the stories, and they are really great, You guy's should be very proud!! The example your town, and everyone associated is the most positive and sincere message I have seen since 9-11. I think your Memorial, and all that it took to accomplish it, should be displayed for everyone in the world to see and understand,

Again, congrats. and tell everyone we said hello!

It is really impressive that a small community like Anthony has created and hosts the state's official memorial.

The memorial is striking.  The circular shape speaks of community, the limestone base evokes Liberty, the steel sculpture will not allow anybody to forget what it is and why it's there.  It's scale is human and height meets the viewer
eye-to-eye.  It is classy and beautiful.

It is a credit to those it honors. and it conveys the pure thoughtfulness of the people of Anthony.

Thanks so much to you and Anthony Kansas . Your town is the BIG STAR in the middle of this great nation . You'll never know how much honor and healing you have given to so many people involved in the events of  9-11-01 . Look on Mapquest, you really are the star in the middle of the country !( No accident )

I just want to share this small story with you. I was born in Bronx, not far from Ladder 38 and Engine 88, it was a largely Italian neighborhood . I lived about three miles away. My older brother Tommy joined the FDNY in the early 70's and was assigned to Ladder 38. I became a fire buff, listening to an old fire radio he brought home. I would be up sometimes to one in the morning listing to the crackle and dispatcher's 10-4 and 10-92 box 2433 Time out 2320. Most kids were Yankee fans. My heart would race at the sound of an FDNY siren whining it's way down the street. One afternoon Tommy was off and he took us to the Bronx Zoo. On the way home Ladder 38 was returning from a call. They stopped in the middle of the street and Tommy asked if we wanted to ride on the truck. I acted like it was no big deal, but I could hardly breath. The ride was only a few short blocks and then we backed into the firehouse. As the afternoon sun was falling between the bricks on Belmont Ave., Tommy was winding down a conversation with the guys. It's funny how when you back on life, it comes down to moments that will stand in the front of all the others, as events you'll always remember so clear, you could swear it was an hour ago. The reason I mentioned this small event in my life is that when I was standing outside this firehouse, in the Bronx, I heard the echo of somebody's mother crying out in the alley, "Anthony! Anthony!"  It would bounce off one brick wall and onto another and it could be heard for miles through the Bronx. A mother yelling to her children out the window was so common, you didn't give it a second thought. That was how a child knew it was time for supper. It was an Italian neighborhood and I bet at the time, there were five Anthonys all playing in those streets at once, but each one knew what
Anthony was being called.

I guess what I mean to say is that somehow your town heard the cry Anthony !  And somehow you knew you were being called.

Again, on behalf of all the silent broken hearts ,you might not hear from, God Bless Anthony Kansas .

Excerpts from a letter by Barbara Spor O’Rourke

As the sister of fallen Firefighter Joseph P. Spor Jr., I am grateful for this opportunity to tell you what the Anthony Kansas Memorial means to our family. It’s the stuff stories are made of. Your great mayor, John Schott, and his family and his constituency reached out to us in our darkest hour and reassured our family and all of those affected, that the United States was ONE in this attack and that we stood together as a nation. Although we are separated by 1300 miles, our hearts and spirits were joined as one.

Now, almost four years later, when we speak of the horrors and tragedy of 9/11, we always can finish our story about the good people of Kansas who cared and gave as patriotic Americans, a place whose people want to always remember the innocent victims and great heroes of September 11th.  Living in the New York City metropolitan area, I personally have not seen a 9/11 memorial that is of the magnitude of the Anthony Memorial. We wholeheartedly support the effort to designate the Anthony Memorial as the official Kansas Memorial. We know you are proud of your fellow citizens of Kansas for this tremendous feat. We are truly honored by this memorial and are forever grateful for your efforts.

To the citizens of Anthony, Kansas......

We followed you from the beginning......You gave all of us inspiration.... You showed the world what could be accomplished and now, far away in miles only, from "The Hallowed Grounds" of the World Trade Center, you continue to be a shining light in the darkness of those who would use that site for purposes other than memorializing those who gave their lives on 9-11-01. We thank you !

Subject: Thank you!

To the folks of Anthony,

As the fourth anniversary of 9/11 is rapidly approaching, I find that so many people have forgotten what happened on that beautiful, horrible day.

As one of the thousands who lost a family member that day, it makes me feel good knowing that a small town like yours stands with us to honor those who were murdered that day.

My husband lost his oldest brother and many friends at the WTC that day.  They were all firefighters, doing what they loved.

My husband is retired FDNY and made it to NYC on 9/15/01.  He worked on the rescue and recovery for 8 months, with a 2 week break to come home for Christmas 2001.  He and his father and younger brother (dad is retired FDNY and brother is still on the job) spent countless hours working at the site.  They never did find my brother in law, FF Gary P. Geidel, Rescue Co. 1.

Thank you for all of your hard work and inspiration.  You truly do live in the HEART-land of America and your memorial proudly shows it.

Warmest regards,

Subject: 'take back the memorial rally'

Dear Fellow, in Kansas, America,

I read that your town is having a take back the WTC Memorial rally in the New York Post. What a breath of fresh air to see that there are still people that care what happened to us that day and want to preserve the memory of the 2900 office/maintenance worker victims[some of whom did many unrecorded unselfish and heroic deeds before they were killed that day] and the 343 fireman & the 60 or so cops who went into the Towers to rescue all or die trying [the heroes of 9/11]. So as to not accidentally show myself as
one of these 'blood bought heroes, let me say for the record that I am not a cop or fireman. I am the assistant chief engineer of 52Broadway, 3 blocks
south of the old Towers. That day I had my own buildings tenants and various other evacuees to help, I didn't get up to them until 3:30 that day,
after they both had fallen and was just on some 'bucket brigades' for the first few days until it became apparent that everyone left behind was
indeed lost.

I doubt that the 'reinventors of history' in this rotten state will give a rip what the entire state of Kansas or anyone else thinks for that matter.
They will continue to shove this 'modern art masterpiece' down the our throats. I will now need to feel guilty that I am an American, a New
Yorker an almost victim of 9/11, and a potential victim of the next attack every time I see this piece of trash.

You have no idea now comforting it is that there are others out there, I cannot escape the irony that your entire town population +/-3000 is less
that the total # of the victims here that day. Thank You again.

                                                Sincerely,
                                                Frank Finamore

TAKE BACK THE MEMORIAL RALLY!
September 10, 2005 - New York, New York
Corners of Church & Liberty Streets

We ask our fellow Americans and friends from around the world to travel to New York and stand with us to save Ground Zero from endless controversy.

Together, we can ensure the integrity of our nation's 9/11 Memorial for future generations.

More details will be available at www.takebackthememorial.org
{http://www.takebackthememorial.org} as the date approaches.

 Hi everyone,

Just an update on the City's attempt to designate the Anthony 9-11 Memorial as THE official 9-11 Memorial for the state of Kansas...

Last Thursday our Rep. Bill McCreary and north Harper County's rep.Dennis McKinney introduced a resolution on the floor of the Kansas house to designate the Anthony 9-11 Memorial as Kansas's official 9-11 Memorial for the years 2005 and 2006. It passed unanimously.

This week (Wednesday or Thursday) our Sen. Teichman will introduce the same resolution on the floor of the senate.  She expects passage.  Once that's done, we can refer to the Anthony 9-11 Memorial as THE Kansas 9-11 Memorial.

The reason they introduced it as a resolution is that there's no time left in the legislature for a full-blown bill.  McCreary, McKinney and
Teichman assured me they will introduce a bill in January 2006 (at the beginning of the next legislature) and that the bill would make it permanent.

Good news!

John

Good Morning.

I was the guy that coordinated the piece of the Pentagon for your
memorial. I was wondering if there were any finished photos of the memorial that showed it in it's entirety that you may be able to send to us here.  We're kind of putting together a "scrapbook" of memorials that we've given limestone to and this would be a wonderful addition.

 Thanks

I just now was able to see the website on Anthony's 9-11 memorial. I was very touched by the page. It makes me very proud to have served in the USN knowing all the support we have gotten. Yes I was off the coast of New York when the accident happened, it is definitely a day to never be forgotten. I just want to say thanks for everything.

I was wondering if there were any more available bricks for the 9-11 Anthony Memorial?  My oldest brother was a member of Ladder 38 (now retired )
I also had two brothers involved in the ground zero operations .

thank you.

Hi Debbie -

unfortunately, I was unable to make it as I had to go out of town to Texas on business.  I did review the pictures that you uploaded to the site.  Looks like you had a wonderful turn out.  We are hoping that we can get down there within the next 20-30 days and see the great job that was done.  If I can ask a favor, and it is okay if you are unable, but can you take a picture of the brick that was laid for us??  That would be wonderful.  I can pass that around to the family and pass on the last email that you sent out on your broadcast for all the rest to see the great work that was done.  Again, and as always through the past months, THANKS FOR THE GREAT DEDICATION AND WORK THAT YOU AND ALL HAVE DONE FROM ANTHONY, KANSAS, AND ALL THE SURROUNDING FROM CITY TO CITY AND STATE TO STATE.  BLESS THOSE WE HAVE LOST, AND BLESS THAT THOSE SERVE IN OUR SPECIAL SERVICES, ASSOCIATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS.

Thankfully,

YOU ARE OUR HERO'S!!

To all in Anthony,

You people are the most amazing folks in the world. My wife and I are so glad we were able to make it to the Memorial dedication, it is beautiful. After a trying week, your dedication was just what the doctor ordered. To have the privilege of not only taking part, but if I recall, it is because of the initial inspiration, (Anthony Ks." wanting to do something"), that made all this happen.

What I am saying is through all of this I have made some very close and strong relationships. From the brothers there in the Anthony Fire Dept., to the Honorable Mayor John Schott and his family, all the way to The Bronx, Joe Huber, and Kevin Maher.

I want to say thank you, along with my wife we have never experienced such hospitality. The example your town puts forth is second to none. I would like to close by saying, in my book, YOU ARE THE REAL HERO'S!!!!

Thank You, God Bless

Ray and Jean Wynn

Donna,

Hi. My name is Michael Kotula and I am a NYC Fireman at Engine 40 and Ladder 35. I'm writing to thank you for including the men we lost in your memorial to 9/11.
I spoke to all the families and they are delighted to have their men honored. I am mailing back the forms today. The form does say that if we wished to have them grouped together to let you know. Well we do! They were together till the end and will always remain together.

I have been here at 40&35 for 22 years now and I worked with all of the men. Several of them where also my very good friends and considered brothers by me. So I would personally like to thank you.

We have a new firefighter here who is from Kansas City Kansas and still has all his family there. So maybe with his help we can get up a trip out there in the near future to visit the memorial.

Once again thank you for considering our families and if there is any way I can help, feel free to email me.

Gratefully yours, FF Michael Kotula L-35

P.S. What is the estimated date of completion?

Just wanted to send you a quick note of thanks for asking the Wichita Fire Dept. Honor Guard to be involved with the dedication ceremony this past Saturday. Hi there--  this is John's sister in St. Louis----and I just want to tell you all that I think you've done a wonderful job at pulling all of this together.....I'm so glad to get your email, Debbie, that it all went over very well and that there were lots of Anthony folk and out of towners who were in attendance to support the victims and their families as a show of support.  I know it's been hard and you have gone through a lot to pull the whole thing off!  CONGRATULATIONS!

Debbie, I wait anxiously to see the pictures and hear of any details about last night...I was so sorry I couldn't be there to experience it for myself...and I haven't called John or Pam yet because I figure they're kind of busy and tired today, as well....

Please pass on to the whole committee and all the people who worked so hard on getting this to happen --our gratefulness!  One of these days, everyone will be thankful that you put the effort in to do this....Know that you're appreciated already, though, by many people all over the country!!

We want to thank you and the Anthony 9-11 committee, the town of Anthony and everyone involved for sharing your memorial.  It was so good to commemorate 9-11 with so many people who really get it.  There seem to be fewer every year.  I'll get pictures and video to you ASAP - but I'm sure many others will have better.

Thanks again.

Debbie, thank you for sending me the 9-11 Memorial Update.  I commend you and the people of Anthony for your hard work building the memorial.  I believe the memorial is a tribute to the spirit of the people in Anthony and to the people who died on 9-11.   I wish I could be in Anthony to see the dedication of the memorial but, I have to work.

HELLO FRIENDS!

Our beautiful memorial has been dedicated and is just gorgeous!  We had a beautiful, warm evening.  Our town showed up in force and filled the park.  And lots of travelers from all over the nation were there to help us celebrate the lives of your heroes.

And Mr. Boyle, I want you to know that throughout the entire evening, I had Michael's heart that you sent to
me in the palm of my hand.  And Marge and Maggie, you were in all of our thoughts and we know that Maggie's boys, (which is what we call those fortunate enough to have you as their angel)  were up there watching us all
evening.

I promise to get the photos of the evening on line ASAP.  Tonight, we are having a little get together with the firefighters and EMT's at Howard's.

I just wanted to let you know that the dedication is over and it was a wonderful evening.

 Debbie Mangen

To the wonderful people of Anthony:

On this 3rd anniversary of my Joe's tragic death, it is hard to believe how much time has passed without having him in our daily lives.

Joe was an exemplary member of the FDNY and he was everything to me and my four children. Not many families shared the bond that we shared. Not many
families had what we had.

Joe had gone in to work for his evening tour on the 10th and was to return home a little after six in the evening on the 11th. 9/11/01 started out as just another normal, carefree, happy day. I spoke to Joe, at 8:30 AM, on the phone, while he was at the quarters of Rescue 3 before he, and the seven other members, got the call. Joe was looking forward to putting in
the day tour and then return home to his family. Joe's firehouse got the call around 8:47 AM. I heard the alarm in the background.

As the events unfolded the morning of 9/11, my initial thought was that Joe would not be home until midnight. It was a war zone down in Manhattan. We were attacked by terrorists and Joe was going to do everything in his
power to help those in need. That was what he did. That was what he was trained to do. That was his calling. Little did I know that our life, my world, would crash, tumble down, as fast as the South Tower did.

The days and many long months that followed after that tragic day is one BIG blur.  I still can not believe it happened....to him...to me...to my children...to our family...to our friends...to our City that we grew
up in and loved...and to our Nation.

Then there were people in and out of my life offering hope and help. Some were best friends, some were friends from long ago, some were acquaintances.  And then there were the people of Anthony. How could it be that a small town so far away could find its way to me and my children? Who would have thought that the people of Anthony,KS would care so much about us?  This "connection"  would not have been made possible without the involvement of Lt. Joe Huber ( a man that Joe worked with at Engine 88/Ladder38, whom he looked up to and admired), and complete and absolute strangers from
halfway across the country.. Mayor John Schott and the people of Anthony.

It has truly been comforting for my children to NOW that people of Anthony think of them often. That my children know the people of Anthony think of their daddy as a hero, just as they do. That my children know that the people of Anthony are so proud of their daddy, just as they are. That the people of Anthony have built such a beautiful memorial in their daddy's honor as well as the other heroes of  9/11. My children now know
what real wheat looks like before it is processed in to bread. They now know what a combine looks like and they "can't wait" to get their first ride on one when we come out for our visit. I am sure that they will feel at home in Anthony.

To all of you who stand here today to honor my husband, Joe, my children's father, as well as the other heroes from 9/11....not a second goes by that I don't think of  my Joe, and not a day goes by that I do not think
of them...or of you.

Once again, thank you for your love and support.

"WE WILL NEVER FORGET"

With deepest gratitude,

Colleen Casey Spor

 Memorial bricks.....

I was looking through the FDNY Rescue 3 website and found the continuing coverage about Joe Spor and your communities' ongoing relationship with them.

Our department here has a Rescue 3 so we feel a connection as well.

I'll definitely get my donation and words for the brick together.  What a great reason to head north from a trip to Oklahoma City.

Best wishes and many thanks for what you all are doing for those great people in NYC!

You mentioned the cut off for bricks to be included at the 9/11 ceremony is next week.  With that in mind, I'm emailing this request.

I would like to have the following engraved for the pathway:

Mychal's Prayer

Lord, take me where
You want me to go;
Let me meet who
You want me to meet;
Tell me what
You want me to say,
and
Keep me out of Your way.

July 23rd update

Thank you for sending me the update on construction of the Anthony 9-11 Memorial.  I live in Overland Park, KS.  Since I'm not in Anthony to observe the construction I really enjoy the pictures of it.

The Anthony 9-11 Memorial is a wonderful tribute to help the generations of people to come remember what  happened on that awful day.  The memorial is also a great tribute to spirit of the people in Anthony.

Great work!

Thank you.

Dear People of Anthony,

Enclosed is the amount to sponsor one brick for your memorial.  I am assigned to Engine 88 (housed with Ladder 38) in the Bronx.  I was assigned to this firehouse as a Lieutenant shortly after 9-11-01 and thereby never got a chance to work with Joseph Spor Jr.  Non the less I have been so moved by your care, concern, kindness and action to remember all of our fallen brothers.  Joe Huber has kept all of us informed and has been quite the "Kansas ambassador".  Although I probably will not be attending the dedication, I do hope some of the guys can make it.

Personally, I have also had a relationship with a farming community in the west and have a sincere appreciation for the "back bone of America" that you all represent.  For the past 8 years, myself and a few other FDNY members have spent a couple of weeks each fall bow hunting deer on a cattle ranch up in North Dakota.  We spend the day helping out on the ranch and the early morn & evening hunting.  It has become our most "looked forward to" time of year.  Our friends recently sold their ranch, perhaps some day I'll hunt in Kansas!!!!

Thanks again for all your hard work.

I am a friend and coworker of Joanne Peppard, Joe Spor's sister, and am honored to be able to contribute to your beautiful memorial.

On July 4, 2004 I stood at Ground Zero.  That morning the Cornerstone for the new Freedom Tower was put in place.  It is still a very special place to be, but someday it will be built up and life will move on.  Your memorial will always be there to remind us of the sacrifice of Joe Spor and his fellow firefighters at Engine 88.

Thank you.

9/11 Memorial

It doesn't matter where I was on September 11th, 2001 and it doesn't matter if I had any personal friends or family in New York that sad sad day;  I have never had any one single tragedy touch my heart like that day. They all became my friends & family that day. As I watched those men & women run into the towers I remember thinking how selfless their
acts of rescue truly were. I'll never forget the helplessness that overcame me as I sat watching the World Trade Towers collapse, fearing
that the chances of escape and futile. Yet, amazingly, stories of great courage and miracles surfaced. I love the fact that this memorial gives
me the ability to show my appreciation and gratitude for all those that sacrifice their lives everyday. Life is too precious to waste on
trivial matters, and the fallout of 9/11 has continued to shape how I think, how I treat others, and most of all, it completely re-ignited my patriotism. 'Never Forget' is a message that Americans need to keep close to their hearts!

To the Anthony 9-11 Memorial Committee:

Thank you for all your dedication and hard work in building a memorial to the victims of 9-11-01 terrorist acts.  The words of those who have written in on your Guestbook have really touched me.

I feel that your memorial will be a perfect place to remember my loved ones who have passed away over the years.  Flowers at the grave wilt and fade away.  But now, I'll know their names will be permanently etched in a beautiful setting in a caring town in Kansas.

I have already purchased a brick for myself.  Now I want to purchase 4 more bricks to read as follows:

    - In Memory of William and Clara Austin

    - Memoriam - Les & Dorritt Heideman
    - Marguerite Herb & Shirley Schnake

Thank You! and I'll put my check in the mail to you today.

Subject: coming home

I just wanted to say thank you.  I do not need this posted on the website.

I am sure many of you know who I am as my mother is on the committee.  I know that getting funds for this memorial has been very trying on many of you, but the idea of quitting would be easier never prevailed.  You have all put in countless hours of your time in order to make sure that this beautiful memorial happens.

As I said in the meeting that I attended for the memorial, I think that this is great for Anthony.  I do not get home as much as I would like, but I still consider Anthony as my home.  The great thing about Anthony is that there are always people thinking about others and they are always concerned about what is going on with you (whether you want them to or not).  J  This memorial will give those of us that are not at home and have not gone through this process with you an opportunity to remember a major event in our lives (together).  As one of my college professors said, this is the first (and hopefully the last) major traumatic event that our generation has had to face.  It brought us closer to the generations before us.  It reminded older generations of events that happened in their lifetime and made my generation more aware of those events.  I believe that this horrible tragedy somehow brought the generations closer together and gave each of us a respect for each other.  I know that this is something that I will always think of when I see the memorial.  Thank you for a place that I can go and remember.

Some of my friends from Olathe and I are coming down for the dedication of the memorial.  Again, thanks for all of your hard work and I wish I could help.  My check for a brick is in the mail.

Thanks for your quick response.  I've talked to some friends and we've decided we want to purchase twenty-three bricks in memory of the NYPD members who were taken on 9-11.  Please give me a week or so to round up the checks.  In the meantime.....

Would you mind e-mailing them again and let them know the gesture has been made in memory of the Vigiano Brothers.   I'm also hoping you won't mind asking them to provide you with a list so we're sure to get their ranks and unit numbers right.

If you don't hear from them within a week or so, I'll send it directly to Mr. Vigiano.  Ditto if it's something you're not comfortable with doing.

Thanks again for everything.  I'll talk to you soon.

I'd like to buy two bricks and have my fathers' name engraved on one brick and my mothers' name engraved on the other.  My parents grew up and are buried in Anthony.

Would this be appropriate for the memorial?

My parents are Lynndell Baker and Virginia Baker-Hays. (Mom remarried after my father died.) I doubt you know my parents because they lived in Anthony in the 1920's through the 1940's.

To whom it may concern:

After reading the article this A.M. in the Kansas City Star about the 9-11 Memorial the town of Anthony is trying to fund.  We felt moved to send this check to help with the cost.  As a Firefighter-EMT (Bob) for the past 25 years for the City of Lenexa, and having an identical twin brother as an EMT (Bill) for the past 27 years for Johnson County Medical Action.  We can relate to all the EMS Men and Women of 9-11.

We would be honored to have our names placed together on a brick for the walkway.  Please engrave Bob and Bill Burnett.

Thank you to all who are involved in this project.  As fellow Kansas folk we are proud of you and our state.

Here is a bit of help for creating your 9-11 Memorial.  I only wish there could be lots more zeros before the decimal point.

If it wouldn't create a fuss, could a brick simply say  "God Bless"?

2nd choice: "In remembrance".

With Thanksgiving for your community's reaching out and caring, and with good wishes that your goal is achieved,

Dear Sir or Madam;

I read about the 9/11 Memorial which will be erected in Anthony, in today's Wichita Eagle newspaper.

I would like to participate by ordering a brick.

I am sure it will be a handsome, meaningful memorial, once completed, and I certainly hope to visit it.

Please advise when it is anticipated the Memorial will be completed.

April 12, 2004

You should be congratulated for the wonderful web site you all put together.  I never get tired of hearing stories like Anthony's relationship with the Rescue-3 firehouse.  I've read recently that  when horror or atrocities occur that it cracks open the human heart and allows the true goodness to come out for all to see.  Anthony's relationship with the Bronx is such an example!

I'm not surprised to hear of your experience with [my friend].  She has been nothing short of an angel on my shoulder for the past year and a half, in getting my film out there for all to see.  She's also--from behind the scenes--performed countless random acts of kindness to many family members of the firemen that perished on Sept 11th.  She's truly, one of the good guys.

I'm very happy to hear that Anthony was the recipient of a piece of World Trade Center steel.  I feel however, that it's a travesty that more towns like Anthony, who were there for us when it counted, weren't more fortunate...as the bulk of the salvaged steel wound up (as I understand it) in Japan...sold as scrap.

I wish you all the luck in the world this coming September 11th when your rescue truck will rides into town featuring your well earned steel memorial for all to see.  It should truly be a moment to remember.  I'm certain you will make NYC proud.

I wish you a very Happy Easter and once again, thank you for writing me.

Sincerely,

Mike Lennon

Hi Debbie,

Well back to the answering to your question of Cole, his last name is O’Leary. Hi Dad, Uncle, Great Uncle (my husband) and Grandfather (retired) are all Policemen. Cole has had a lot of exposure to both fire and police. My husband was a volunteer fireman since he was fourteen. Then when he took the position of Police Chief in’85 he had less and less time to give.  He and Cole go to the station frequently. Cole also likes to ride with Tom in his new Ford 150,4x4 police truck.  We’re in a small town also.

Thanks for remembering us. We wish you all the luck in getting the memorial built. We intend to buy a couple of bricks and to attend the dedication in September.

            Bye for now,

            Sharon Carey

Thanks so much for including the pictures of Cole and Joe on your website ... I have an article that was in our local paper, too, that I put in .pdf form which will hopefully raise some awareness for the Memorial.  We are planning on coming to Anthony the w/end of 9/11 and hopefully bringing some of our local firemen.

Thanks, again!!!!
Keep in touch!

Thank You for this wonderful project.  I am a survivor of the WTC attacks on 9-11 ( in the concourse area underneath when the first plane hit the north tower).  I was just outside the south tower when it was hit.  I live in Shawnee, Kansas (outside of KC) and saw a piece on the local news about your project.  Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you in your efforts.  As you might imagine it is very important to me to ensure that all  remember those brave men and women who gave their lives that day.  Thank you again for organizing this wonderful tribute.

Ladies/Gentlemen,

My father, Elmer W. "Pete" Mills was a member of Engine Company 88 for nearly thirty years until he retired.  He passed away in 1987, and spoke constantly about how much he missed "the job" and his "brothers".  I have no doubt that if he had been alive on September 11th, he would have grabbed his helmet and gear and reported for duty.  On the other hand, I'm grateful that he wasn't around to see it, because it would have broken his heart.

Therefore, I would like to purchase a brick for the Anthony, Kansas 9-11 Memorial in his name.

Thank you.

Sincerely Yours,

Mary A. Mills

Dear Committee,

Three hundred forty three of my brothers died on September 11th.  Please accept my donation for three memorial bricks in honor of them and my good friend and brother, Joe Huber.  I thank you for honoring all the 9-11 heroes and your support for Joe Spor's family.  We will "NEVER FORGET".

Thanks again,

I read about you guys in the Daily News on 3/23/04. Thank You for all that you are doing....I had the honor of knowing Joe Spor....Please send me updates and a brochure.. I will pass the word around about the 9/11 memorial.
Tony Bueti

I read about this memorial in the New York Daily News today.  What a wonderful town you are from!  I am originally from the Bronx, and now live in West Nyack, NY, about 30 minutes away.

My husband had many appointments down at the World Trade Center at all times, so on 9/11, I didn't know if he was there or not, and at first I couldn't reach him on his cell phone.  I also knew many people who I knew where definitely down there, after working for 15 years in Manhattan myself, and having many, many friends who are police and firemen.

My fifth child was 12 days old on that day, and I was a complete wreck.  However, I was one of the lucky ones whose husband came home that day.  My sister walked from Manhattan to the Bronx.  Many could not.

One of those people were Donald McIntyre, someone I went to high school with in the Bronx, graduating in 1980.  I hadn't seen "Mackey" since then, but I did talk to him in 2000 when I was running our 20th high school reunion.  He couldn't make it then, his wife would be away and he was in charge of the two kids, but "nothing would keep him from the 25th".  Little did we all know.  I had a lovely conversation with him, and remember wishing he could attend. He was a Port Authority police office stationed at the WTC.

When I heard Mackey was lost, I pulled out my yearbook.  He had written me a lengthy farewell next to his photo, and the words were very sweet and funny, just as I remembered him.  The last line was most poignant: "Please don't ever forget me."

So, it is with this in mind that I would like to purchase a brick for my old friend Donald J. McIntyre, whose third child was born three months after Sept. 11th.  I have printed out the form, and will mail it to you tomorrow.

Thank you, and your wonderful town, for this opportunity.

Sincerely,

Colette Minogue-Cannataro
Class of 1980

Please send me updates on the memorial. I used to work with Joe Spor and sent out my donation for a brick in his memory.

Thanks,

Please add me to your e-mail address book, . Also send me a brochure.
Thank You

To whom it may concern,

I would like to take this opportunity to let you know what a noble task you have taken on.  This is a great tribute to the people of Anthony Kansas and the whole state of Kansas.  I have always said that it is up to our generation to preserve the memories of what took place in America on this date.  We can not rely on the Federal government to write books and stories about men and women who died that day.  We have to take the initiative and build our own memorials and have our own tributes to the families and love ones that "we will never forget".

I would like to remind you that FF Joseph Spor was killed that day while working in Rescue Co. 3.

Sincerely,

FDNY AGAIN !

JUST SO TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT THE FDNY HEROES, YEAH THEY WERE THERE SO WERE THOUSANDS OF OTHER PEOPLE, INNOCENT PEOPLE. PEOPLE THAT WENT TO WORK EVERY DAY, MAYBE BEHIND A COMPUTER, BEHIND A MOP, JUST ORDINARY PEOPLE. WE WENT IN THAT BUILDING BECAUSE IT WAS OUR JOB, WE KNEW WHAT WE SIGNED UP FOR, THE INNOCENT PEOPLE IN THE BUILDING DIDN'T. THEY SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED, BUT NO WE DO NOT RECOGNIZE THEM.

I AM NOT A FIREFIGHTER NOR WOULD I LIKE TO BE ONE AFTER WHAT I WITNESSED THAT DAY AND THE LONG YEAR AFTER WORKING AT "GROUND ZERO. "I JUST WISH THE PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD WOULD UNDERSTAND WHAT ACTUALLY WENT ON WITH THE "FDNY" I WOULD RATHER NOT EXPLAIN WHAT I WITNESSED.
                           PAPD

[9-11 Committee response]

Hello.

Thank you for your thoughts about Sept. 11.  We understand that there were others killed there, as well as in DC and PA.  The Anthony 9-11 Memorial is being erected to the memory of those true patriots who gave their lives during this horrific tragedy in NYC, Washington D.C. and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and to honor those left behind.  The memorial is about ordinary people who met extraordinary challenges, working together to make a difference across our nation, and in the lives of one heroic firefighter's family.  It will tell the story of the connection between a small farming community in south-central Kansas, fallen firefighter Joseph P. Spor, Jr. and his brothers at Engine 88, Ladder 38.

Anthony's personal connection has been made by adopting one family and helping them through their future.  We realize, as a small town of 2,300 hard working people, we would not be able to make a difference in the realm of the disasters at hand, but we could help one family.  We wish we could have helped more.

Our memorial is for everyone; we want it to be a place where generations to come will learn how those events affected our country as a whole.  How rescue workers, whether they were firefighters, police officers, medics, or the people from all walks of life, worked together to help each other through this difficult time in our lives.

I'm sure the events you witnessed will be with you forever.  Even though we live 1,500 miles from NYC, we were horrified by the images we saw.  Our thoughts will always be with the people who were there, those who lost loved ones, no matter their reason for being where they were that day, no matter what their nationality was.

Sincerely,
Debbie Mangen
Anthony's Sept. 11 Committee Member

Donna:

Thanks a bunch.  You've really made my day.  I sent the info up to Michael & David's parents today.  I know it will be a bright spot in their day.  Can't tell you how much I appreciate everything.

I intend to put the word out about what you've agreed to do.  I'm pretty sure you'll be hearing from others.  Please keep me posted on the progress.  If you don't mind, I may check in from time to time to see how things are going.

I also want you to know how nice it is to come across folks that remember.  It seems the numbers grow fewer by the day.  Many thanks to you and the City of Anthony.  Take care.

Ms. Crowe:
After we spoke yesterday, something came to mind.  As you may or may not know, there has been a decision made about the design of the memorial proposed for NY.  Specifically, the families have been told that the names had to be listed randomly.  This was very troubling to many of the families of first responders.  Most had hoped their loved ones could be listed together, i.e., allowing the firefighters to be listed with others lost from their companies.

If it doesn't complicate things too much, I would like to make arrangements to have bricks "reserved" for the individuals listed below.   As you can see, I've listed them by company, which, if possible is how I would like them placed.

Do you think this will be a problem?  If not, would you consider allowing other families/friends to make a similar request?

Finally, if it's okay, I'm sending the funds for the bricks I would like to "reserve", but it's my preference to allow the families of each to decide what their loved one's brick will say.  With this in mind, I will be forwarding your order forms to the families and ask that they send them directly to you.
Hopefully, this doesn't complicate things too much.  If it does, please don't hesitate to say so.

Please reserve bricks for the following individuals and list/group them as follows:

LT. Kevin Pfeifer, Engine 33
FF. Robert King, Jr., Engine 33
FF. David Arce, Engine 33
FF. Michael Boyle, Engine 33
FF. Keithroy Maynard, Engine 33

FF. Brian Bilcher, Ladder 9
FF. Robert Evans, Ladder 9
FF. Jeffrey Walz, Ladder
FF. John Tierney, Ladder 9
FF. Gerard Baptiste, Ladder 9

CPT. James J. Corrigan, FDNY Retired
FF. Philip Hayes, FDNY Retired
FF. William X. Wren, FDNY Retired

Purchasing the bricks is something I want to do, regardless of the City's decision about placement.  With this in mind I have forwarded funds for thirteen bricks.

Can't thank you enough for your time, as well as what I hope will be a favorable decision on your part regarding the placement of the bricks.  Take care.

Memorial Bricks

Ms. Crowe:
I have two friends who both lost their sons on 9/11.  They were both firefighters who grew up together, joined the fire service together, rotated through three stations together and, when last seen, were together at the Trade Center.  As you might guess, when both families received notification that remains had been positively identified, they decided to bury the boys together.

I would like to purchase personalized bricks for both, but it's crucial that the bricks be placed together.  Is this something that can be arranged?

Thank you for your time and, more importantly, your efforts to help remember those taken.  Take care.

Dear Mayor Schott,

I write in support of your memorial to be dedicated in September.  By way of introduction, I am Charlie Huber, father of Lt. Joe Huber, FDNY.  Joe has kept us informed of his "Anthony Connection" since day one. I feel as if I am well acquainted with you and the wonderful town of Anthony, Kansas. The welcome and support you and your city gave him and the FDNY will always be remembered. The gifts to Colleen and her children were blessings and love from the heart of each donor in Anthony.

Not only will my wife and I purchase a brick, but I will inform others who may wish to participate in your program. I am a member of our local fire department, so you know they will be encouraged to sign up. (I was an active member back in the 60's, trained in the seminary and came back as chaplain.)

One of my daughters is ready to contribute but wants to know what can be put on the brick. How big is each brick? How many lines of inscription on each? How many letters per line? We have memorial bricks in front of our church, so we are a bit familiar with such a remembrance walk.

I have copied some of the pages from your memorial website to help sell the project.

Thank you for everything,
Charlie

To the town of Anthony, KS,

What a beautiful memorial you are going to build.  It's comforting that a small town in Kansas recognizes the devastation from one tragic day and has not forgotten.

You should be proud.......Please put me on your mailing/update list.  I would be interested in donating a brick in memory of Joseph Spor Jr.

Sincerely yours,

Annie

Although I no longer live in Anthony it was where I was born and raised.  I've always been proud of being from there but now more than ever.  Anthonians you have done yourself proud.  The support you gave to the 9-11 situation and the memorial pretty much says it all.  Proud to be an American and proud to be from Anthony, KS!  Thank you all,
